Biography

An Academy Award-winner for Erin Brockovich, Julia Roberts has appeared in many of Hollywood’s most successful films, worked with the industry’s most esteemed directors, and her films have grossed more than $3 billion worldwide. Since Erin Brockovich, she has starred in three films by director Stephen Soderbergh: Ocean’s ElevenOcean’s Twelve, and Full Frontal.

She first came to the attention of audiences with her critically acclaimed role in Mystic Pizza. Then, with Steel Magnolias, she received her first Academy Award® nomination. Her next film, Pretty Woman, was the top-grossing film of 1990 and brought Roberts her second Academy Award® nomination. She starred in the box-office smash My Best Friend’s Wedding, and soon after, opposite Susan Sarandon and Ed Harris in Stepmom. She then starred in two box-office hits: Notting Hill, costarring Hugh Grant, and Runaway Bride

In addition to her on-screen achievements, Roberts has led the way for celebrity philanthropists in Hollywood. After serving as UNICEF's Goodwill Ambassador to Haiti in the '90s, Roberts lent her star power to the Hope for Haiti Now telethon to benefit earthquake victims. She has also been a supporter of Red Nose Day, an annual fundraising campaign using the power of entertainment to raise awareness about children in need around the world. As part of the campaign, she has promoted the importance of vaccines and delivered polio and rotavirus vaccines to children in Kenya. While there, she also spoke to mothers who lost their babies to pneumonia, another sickness that is preventable with vaccines.

She has been associated with a number of other charitable organizations over the years, including serving as a Chime for Change curator on Catapult.org, the groundbreaking crowdfunding platform for girls' and women's rights. After learning that 3 billion people worldwide are affected by harmful cooking smoke, she took on the role of Global Ambassador of the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves to champion the need for fuel-efficient stoves and clean cooking solutions.

Passionate about environmental justice, Roberts became a spokesperson for alternative fuels company Earth Biofuels Inc., promoting the use of renewable fuels such as biodiesel and ethanol. Additional charitable endeavors include working with the American Foundation for AIDS ResearchBoys & Girls Clubs of Americacharity:water, Global Fund, Red Cross, and serving as a Board Member for Hole in the Wall Gang, the world's largest association of camps for children with serious illnesses. She also narrated Silent Angels, a documentary about Rett syndrome, to help raise public awareness about the disease.
